Phenomenology of Light
Phenomenology of Light comes from a series of work which emphasizes the discrepancy between direct observation and second hand image and challenges perceptions of reality through physical manifestations of light. This work is designed specifically for the human eye, and the light phenomena witnessed are formed through a synthesis of internal and external processes; a combination of the physical properties of light and the observer’s perception. As a result, the direct experience of the work is unable to be accurately replicated in photographs or video and can only be observed in person, essentially making it ‘anti-instagram art’. Phenomenology of Light holds a spherical rainbow suspended in mid air above a black glass bowl, freezing the ephemeral in place for closer inspection, but when photographed, it flattens out and looses its depth which is only achieved through binocular vision.
